Damaged Viaduct

Viaduct collapse, 1908.
The railway was carried across the valley on a massive viaduct. On 4 July 1908 Greenhalph’s dye works collapsed, affecting the viaduct’s foundations, and causing cracks to appear and part of the parapet to dislodge. The line had to be closed to enable repairs to take place, and the “temporary” wooden parapet can still be seen today.
