ORMERODS FARM BAILIF DEAD.Mr. W. G. Leavers 28 years of service, work for Agriculture and Worsthorne.
Not only has Ormerod lost a valued servant, but a fine, cheery, vigorous personality has gone from Worsthorne and neighbourhood in the death on Tuesday at Higher Red Lees of Mr. William Gray Leaver, farm bailiff for Sir John O.S. Thursby. Mr, Leaver, who has passed away in the prime of his life-he was only 55-had an attack of influenza about eighteen months ago, and this left him rather weak, but he appeared-to use the words of one who knew him intimately- to pull up wonderfully. He eventually resumed his business habits, his out of doors life, and seemed to have fully recovered; but influenza, as it so often does, had done permanent mischief. Symptoms of brain trouble appeared, and though these were at first slight, they ultimately became pronounced. For a little over a week previous to his death Mr. Leaver had been confined indoors, and the news of his death was received by everyone in Worsthorne and district with the greatest regret.
Mr. William Gray Leaver, who leaves a widow but no children, was a member of a well known Worsthorne family, being the eldest son of the late Mr. John Leaver, who was for many years associated with Worsthorne and district. Of the family there are six sons and two daughters living. The deceased gentlemans brothers including Mr. Leaver of St. Mathew street, Burnley, headmaster of St. Jamess school, Burnley. Mr. Abraham Leaver, of Fence, and another carries on the post office at Worsthorne, and also a Guardian for that township. Mr Gray Leaver, the assistant Conservative registration agent at Burnley is a nephew. A man of many interests, the late Mr. William Gray Leaver will undoubtedly be best remembered in his capacity of farm bailiff at Ormerod. He was appointed to that position twenty-eight years ago by the Rev. William Thursby, M.A., the grandfather of the present Baronet and had thus seen service under three generations at Ormerod, the Rev. William Thursby, M.A. the late Sir John Hardy Thursby, and the present Baronet, Sir John O.S. Thursby, Bart. The deceased gentleman was a godson of the late Rev. William Thursby, and throughout his life he held the Thursby family in the deepest regard. This regard was mutual, for at Ormerod Mr. Leavers wide experience and tactful and genial personality made him a valued servant and one who will be much missed. During the past few years Mr. Leaver had done much to foster and encourage the breeding and rearing of shorthorn cattle, and no doubt Sir John and Lady Thursby, keenly interested as both are in farming and all that makes for the welfare of agriculture, highly appreciated his ability and sound business methods, which have been the means of bringing the herd of shorthorns at the Home Farm Ormerod; to such a high state of merit and popularity. Indeed the collection of pedigree shorthorns at Ormerod is one of the best in the North of England, and has carried off numerous prizes at the various agriculture shows. Mr. Leavers work as farm bailiff, stock rearer and agriculturist, was successful because he brought to it the first element of success in any undertaking that of love for it. He had keen affection for everything appertaining to the soil, the wind-swept, open unrestricted earth, and before illness laid its hand upon him had the ruddy clearness of skin and the erect form born of an open air life. At the time of his death he was a member of Worsthorne Agricultural Society, and for fifteen years acted as a secretary, retiring from that position a few years ago, owing to pressure of other work. At the same time he was ever a good friend to the society, and took the keenest interest in its welfare.
Amongst other interests he had, Mr. Leaver was a Freemason, and when the Cliviger Parish council was formed in 1894 he was elected a member and with the exception of about three years, had served on the Council since. He had also been a member of the Cliviger Constitutional Club since its formation and was a member of the Cliviger Conservative Association at the time of his death, having been connected with it throughout its existence. His death along with that of Mr. G. Halstead, farmer causes two vacancies on the Cliviger Parish Council. Another position which he filled with distinct credit was that of ?? manager of Merclough Day school. A consistent Churchman throughout his life, Mr. Leaver attended St. Johns Worsthorne, where he was highly respected by all his fellow parishioners. Here the internment takes place this afternoon, in the family vault.1911 LEAVER William Gray of Higher Red Lees Burnley died 18 April 1911. Administration London 22 May to Anna Lydia Leaver, widow.
