HAGGATE’S LOSS.
DEATH OF MR. A. LEAVER, J.P., AT SOUTHPORT.
BURNLEY BUILDING SOCIETY CHAIRMAN.Widespread regret has been caused locally by the death at his residence, “Cockdene,” Hesketh-drive, Southport, last Sunday, of Mr. Abraham Leaver, J.P., aged 73. The loss is particularly felt in the Haggate district, where Mr. Leaver was a familiar and beloved figure.
A native of Briercliffe, he had spent most of his life at Cockden, Briercliffe, and although he removed to Southport a few years ago, he had been a frequent visitor to Rose Cottage, Cockden, where his son and daughters reside.
The son of a Briercliffe quarry owner, Mr. Leaver began his career as a builder, erecting several houses in Harle Syke, and at 22 years of age he was responsible for carrying out the extension to the Harle Syke Mill Co’s shed. Leaving the building trade, he entered manufacturing circles as a partner in the firm of Whitehead and Leaver, of Fulledge and Rake Head mills, retiring from that firm 17 years ago. At his death he was a director of Briercliffe Mill and the Hall Lee Manufacturing Co., Westhoughton.
BUILDING SOCIETY CHAIRMAN.
For seventeen years he had been a director of the Burnley Building Society, and was appointed chairman only three months ago, when Mr. J. W. Jobling retired owing to ill-health.
One of the first magistrates in Briercliffe, he had served on the Bench for 29 years, and was chairman of the licensing justices for the Burnley County Area.
All his life he had taken a keen interest in parochial affairs, having been a member of the Parish Council, and for nine years was the Briercliffe representative on the Burnley Rural District Council and the old Burnley Board of Guardians. Before Haggate School was taken over by the Lancashire County Council, Mr. Leaver also served for ten years on the old Briercliffe School Board.
Much of his time was devoted to the Baptist cause at Haggate, where his practical interest will be greatly missed. For the past 37 years he had been chairman of the chapel trustees, and had also served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent. He also had a lengthy connection with the chapel choir, of which at one time he was choirmaster. A few years ago he hunted up every available record regarding this place of worship, and compiled an authentic history. This was published in a series of illustrated articles in the “Express,” and afterwards reproduced in pamphlet form, and was much appreciated. It is rather singular that his death occurred on the day of the “annual sermons,” an event which he had scarcely missed during his lifetime.
Mr. Leaver, who was a staunch Liberal, celebrated his golden wedding two years ago. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. The son, Mr. J. E. Leaver, is a member of the Briercliffe Parish Council, and his daughter, Mrs. W. Nuttall, is president of the Briercliffe Women Liberals. There are four grand-children and one great-grandchild.
The internment will take place to-day (Wednesday) in the family vault at Haggate Churchyard.
Police Court Tribute.
Reference to Mr. Leaver was made by Mr. James Hindle, presiding over the Reedley Police Court yesterday.
Mr. Leaver, he said, was a gentleman he had known in business and magisterial life for many years, and he had always found him to be a man of fair dealing and one who tempered mercy in his judgement in matters with which he had to deal.
He had been engaged in the administration of justice for almost 30 years, and it was with sorrow that they had parted from him. He sincerely hoped that the traditions he had so faithfully endeavoured to carry out during the whole of that time would be maintained.
Mr. Guy Southern, the Clerk, associated himself with Mr. Hindle’s remarks, observing that Mr. Leaver had been a most courteous and obliging magistrate.
On behalf of the police, Chief Inspector Cook said that Mr. Leaver was one whom they held in the highest esteem and regard.

POPULAR HEADMASTER.
INTERESTING PRESENTATION AT ST. JAMES’S SCHOOL.At the close of school on Thursday afternoon, a pleasing ceremony took place, when Mr. P. Leaver, the headmaster, was the recipient of a beautiful inlaid mahogany time piece, subscribed for by the members of the staff and the scholars, to mark the near completion of his 25 years service as headmaster of the school. Mr. J. F. Reid, the senior assistant, in making the presentation, spoke of the high regard in which the headmaster is held by all of them, and expressed good wishes for his future.
Mr. Leaver, in acknowledging the gift, said he had been taken entirely by surprise that afternoon, and he thanked them, one and all, for that beautiful present, which betokened their sincere respect for the goodwill towards him. He was glad that such a kindly feeling pervaded the school, and it was that spirit which made all of them so happy in their work.
The proceedings closed with hearty cheers for Mr. Leaver, at the call of James Nuttall, one of the top boys of the school.
Mr. Leaver came to St. James’s in August, 1891, and during the tenure of office, has seen many changes of an educational character in the town. In addition to his duties as head master of the day school, he was for a period of 10 years, headmaster of St. James’s evening school.
Many pupil teachers and assistant teachers (some of them afterwards head-teachers) have received their training at his hands, and many of his “old boys” are holding important positions in various parts of the country to-day. The school has given its fair quota to the “fighting forces” and over 100 names are already enrolled on the school’s roll of honour.

Recognised as one of the leading British water colourists of the day, whose pictures have earned him fame in all parts of the world, Mr. Noel H. Leaver, A.R.C.A., of Rowan Cottage, Harriet-street, Burnley, died yesterday morning at the age of 62.
He had not been in the best of health for some months, and earlier this year had been in hospital for treatment.
Mr. Leaver was perhaps the greatest water colourist in architectural studies among British artists, and his paintings of cathedrals and churches were, like his still-life studies and landscapes, widely sought after by art lovers everywhere. He had in fact painted pictures of almost all the better-known cathedrals in the country.
His deep love for nature was reflected in his beautiful landscapes, which are masterpieces of their medium. As for his still-life studies, they, too, demonstrate his remarkable eye for colour and design.
Mr. Leaver had a fine feeling for old buildings and a rare skill in drawing. As a colourist he had learnt something from the old masters, though he was no slavish disciple. His works were always strong enough to be placed in juxtaposition to the paintings of his great forerunners- like Girtin, Turner, Varley and Prout – without running the risk of compromise to his disadvantage.
IN BIG DEMAND
The news of the quality of Mr. Leaver’s work spread abroad very quickly, and he was kept busy meeting the demands of art lovers all over the country. His works quickly found their way into many well-known private and public collections both abroad and at home, such as Towneley Art Gallery, where there are several of his fine pictures.
One prominent collector had no fewer than 30 examples of his work, and among others who had acquired some were Ronald Colman, the film star.
Mr. Leaver had no use for stunts in painting, his aim being to interpret a subject truthfully and to emphasise this parts which give character and beauty to the composition. He made a point of following the tradition of British water colourists, though he never copied them. He once said: “It is for us moderns to make use of the fuller and more varied palette of the present day by getting more colour and life into our drawings
VERSATILITY
While Mr. Leaver’s reputation was chiefly acquired by his studies of architecture, both in its mass and detail, his versatility was remarkable, and the subtlety and vitality noticeable in all his other work helped to build that world-wide reputation which he had soon made for himself.
Mr. Leaver was a son of Mr. Peter Leaver, who for 34 years was headmaster of St. James’s Day School, and who was a member of an old Worsthorne family and had taught at Brierfield and Austwick, in Yorkshire, before coming to Burnley. The late Mr. Noel Leaver was born at Austwick, and was in his boyhood when the family came to Burnley.
He married, in 1924, Miss Jane Simpson, a teacher at the Burnley High School, and the youngest daughter of Mr. T. Simpson, of Colne-road.
BRILLIANT PROGRESS
Mr. Leaver was training in the Burnley Art School at the Mechanics Institute for four years. At 16, he won a National Scholarship and Local Exhibition, both tenable for three years at the Royal College of Art, London.
He proceeded to South Kensington and gained the Full Associateship and “School’s Associateship in Design.”
Mr. Leaver was also awarded the travelling studentship of the R.C.A. for the first place in the college list, and went to Italy for six months and studied architecture and decoration.
On returning to England, he won the Royal Institute of British Architects Travelling Studentship and re-visited Italy, spending his time chiefly in the study of decorative colour subjects. While in Italy he was greatly influenced by the work of the early thirteenth century schools – Fra Angelico and Botticello at the monastery of San Marco in Florence, and also of Turner, greatest of British Water colourists.
A PERSONALITY IN ART
Then after years of serious study and practice, Mr. Leaver emerged as a personality in art. To a thorough academical training at South Kensington he owed the development of remarkable powers of decorative draughtsmanship, and the purity and simplicity of his delightful colouring, to the early Italian masters whom he had studied at first hand.
His student days were a series of brilliant triumphs during which he carried all available honours before him, even to the distinction of a full associateship of the Royal College of Art at 20.
A democrat in ideas, his desire always was to make available to the people beautiful paintings at a modest figure, believing that the “man in the street,” had as much right to enjoy the beauties of nature as his more fortunate fellows.
Mr. Leaver, in his early days, secured distinction coveted by all artists – to have a picture accepted at the Royal Academy. The picture was a water colour of Siena Cathedral.
His fame was such that exhibitions which he held in various centres throughout these islands attracted great interest. He held many exhibitions over the years in Burnley, where his work is very well-known through his pictures at Towneley.
For many years he had a special commission from the Canadian Pacific Railway for drawings.
Mr. Leaver was the president of the Burnley Artists Society of which he was largely instrumental in founding.
He is survived by his widow and by two brothers, Captain Grey Leaver, M.B.E. (a former Conservative agent for Burnley, who is connected with the firm of Fryer and Co., Victory Works, Nelson, and now lives at Southport), and Mr. Bertram Leaver, headmaster of the senior school at Malton, Yorkshire, and by a sister, Mrs. Moffett, wife of Mr. Harold Moffett, former headmaster of Abel-street School, Burnley.
At Mr. Leaver’s own wish, he will be buried at Newchurch-in-Pendle, in the countryside he loved so well. The funeral will be at 11-30 a.m. on Friday following a service at St. Matthew’s Church, Burnley at 10-30 a.m.
GRIEVOUS LOSS
Mr. Harold Grahame Holt, the secretary of the Burnley Artists Society, said to a staff reporter last night: “The Artists Society has sustained a grievous loss by the death of Mr. Leaver. No one could appreciate more than did the officials and committee the magnificent encouragement which he gave to the members of the society. Week after week he came to give us the benefit of his long and varied experience. He was ever ready and willing to offer his help and guidance to local talent.
“We are proud of the credit he brought to Burnley by his great artistic distinction.
“But we will remember nothing more appreciatively than his friendship for all. Despite his eminence in the world of art, he retained that real sincerity of manner which endeared him to all who knew him. He was a gentleman in the true sense of the word. We shall miss him greatly.”

WELL-KNOWN WORSTHORNE MAN.
News reached Worsthorne on Thursday morning that Pte. Richard Leaver, of the Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regt., had been killed whilst waiting orders to go over the top. This sad news was conveyed to his wife in a very sympathetic letter received from the deceased soldiers officer, who was himself wounded soon after.
Pte. Leaver was a native of Worsthorne, and was one of the best known men in the rural district. He was an excellent vocalist, and a keen cricketer and footballer, being a member of Worstorne St. Johns cricket team when they were in the Ribblesdale Junior League. He was a bright, genial character, full of good humour, and an excellent raconteur. For many years he was an official of the Worsthorne Agricultural Society, and a chorister at St. Johns Church. He was also a member of the Worsthorne Pierrot Troupe, and freely gave his services on any good cause.
The deceased, who will be much missed in the village, was in his 42nd year, and leaves a widow and four young children, for whom the greatest sympathy is felt. Pte. Leaver was uncle to Lieut. Gray Leaver, of the Burnley Recruiting Office, and also to Lieut. Harry Gray Leaver, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, who has been wounded in France. Pte. Leaver, who only went to France in March, was one of the first to attest in Worsthorne, and enlisted voluntarily last December. He was employed on the motor of Messrs. J. R. Greenwood and Co., Ltd., Worsthorne, and his employers had an appeal in for him.
The following letter has been received, dated August 5, from Second-Lieut. Mackey by Mrs. Leaver: - Dear madam. I am taking this opportunity to express the deep sorrow of myself and each man of No. 9 Platoon at the loss of such an excellent soldier and man as your husband. His death was instantaneous, as a shell fell in the bay in which he was sitting, and I myself had just been speaking to him and the other poor boys who were with him only two minutes before. This occurred only an hour or two before we went over the top, and your husband was to act as my runner in the operation. Although he was only a few months with us, his excellent work and continuous good humour had already impressed me so much that I had suggested his name for promotion, which he undoubtedly would very soon have obtained. I myself was wounded in the arm just after reaching our objective, about half an hour after going over, so I trust you will accept this excuse for not writing soon. He had often been on dangerous work with me, and at all times showed the greatest courage, and inspired good work out of every person around him. His loss to me is a personal one for he was continually with me, and I regarded him as a friend as well as one of my platoon. Captain Briggs (our company commander) and all C-Company and myself again wish to express our deepest sympathy in your great loss.
