The following info was sent to me by email from a Mr Whitton
comments = I see on your forum page that you have collected information about Thomas Whitham born 1888 in Worsthorpe who was awarded the VC.
I have researched his family and his parents were John Whitham born 1853 a Mason Journeyman who married Catherine Courtney born 1853 at Glasgow on 6-11-1874. The family moved to England about 1882 as 5 of his siblings were born in Scotland and Thomas and 3 other siblings were born in England. At his marriage John 1853- stated that his father was a James Whitham also a Mason and his mother a Jessie McPherson. I have not located them but John 1853- is stated to be born in Scotland and MAY have been in the 1871 census at 15W Bothwell Street, Glasgow a Quarry Labourer (Surname recorded as Watton). There is no sign of his parents. I hope this is of interest to you. I dont suppose we can claim Thomas as a \"Scottish\" VC as he was born in England to Scottish parents but he could have played footbal for Scotland!
Thanks Mr. Whitton.
