Territorial's Fatal Illness
Harle Syke Man's Announcement
Last night we received the following letter from Pte. (11453) Samuel Yates, of the 19th(?) General Hospital Alexandria.
"I have been ordered by the medical officer to inform the relatives of the death in my ward during the early hours of August 9th of Pte Allen. All the words I could get out of him were 'Pte. Allen, of the 5th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment,' and that he lived in the vicinity of Wood Top. his illness was due to chronic dysentry. With the sister and the medical officer in charge, I stayed up with him three days and three nights without any sleep struggling to keep him alive. He had a peaceful end. He will be buried to-morrow (August 10)."
Pte. Yates, whose home is at Harle Syke, wished us to insert this notice and we presume he has not been able to get the address of the relatives of the unfortunate soldier. We have not been able to trace the soldier, so publish the letter as received.
