Both Sons Dead Burnley Family's Sacrifices
Both sons of Mr. and Mrs. Pedley, formerly of 86, Reed-street, Burnley, and now of 5, Hampden-street, have sacrificed their lives for the country's cause. The older son, Corpl. Walter Pedley, of the 5th Batt. east Lancashire Regt., died at malta on Nov. 16th 1915, from pneumonia and appendicitis. The younger brother, Pte. Francis (Frank) Robert Pedley, was in the 10th Batt. Scottish Rifles, and went into action at Loos on Sept. 25th 1915. He was reported missing from that date, and now the War Office have sent his parents official notice presuming that he died in action on that day. He was 18 years old, and before enlisting was a packer at Messrs. Pickles' whittlefield shed. his officer wrote to say he was a good and brave soldier, and that he was hit during the engagement, but no trace of him was discovered afterwards. He was connected with Hollingreave Congregational Church and School.
