OUR FALLEN HEROES.
FAMILY’S THIRD LOSS.
Pathetic Burnley Case.
Mrs. Lowe, of 118, Gordon-street, Stoneyholme, Burnley, has received an official intimation that her husband, Pte. Wm. Lowe (25425), of the King’s Liverpool Regt., died of wounds on September 17th. Pte. Lowe, who was 28 years of age, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowe, of 35, Belford-street, and before enlisting was employed at the Burnley Paper Works. He enlisted on Jan. 12th, 1915, and proceeded on foreign service on January 3rd last. On August 24th his young wife received intimation that he was suffering from malaria fever, so that he must have gone back to the trenches immediately on recover, for he received his fatal wounds on September 14th. He leaves one little girl named Ivy, whom he only saw when she was a fortnight old.
Before joining the Army Pte. Lowe was connected with the Stoneyholme Wesleyan Sunday School, and was a member of the school football team. His widow has received the following letter from Mr. J. T. Whitaker, secretary of the Stoneyholme Young Men’s Class. “I was deeply grieved when I heard of your husband’s death, and I am taking the liberty of sending to you the sincerest sympathy from our young men’s class. At our gathering to-day many kind words were spoken in appreciation of Willie’s connection with Stoneyholme. Mr. Fletcher paid a kindly tribute to him, which fully expressed the feelings of every member of the class. I can tell you without intent or flattery that he was a highly respected young man. You are no doubt in great trouble, but we trust God will give you strength to sustain you in your ordeal. He has paid the supreme sacrifice, and given his life for his country. He did his duty.”
The circumstances of the case are made the more pathetic by it being the third bereavement Mrs. Lowe’s family has suffered within the short space of two months. The family received a heavy blow in the death of Mrs. Lowe’s mother, and then Mrs. Lowe’s brother-in-law, Pte. James Smith, of the East Lancashire Regt., was killed in action on July 5th. Another brother-in-law is with the A.S.C. in France.
