At that time, the Regiment had moved to Ipswich and Norwich http://www.genes.plus.com/ARMYLIST/Dragoons.htm#History
so he may well have been from East Anglia
Or not, of course!

Looks like I need to find a copy of the book mentioned at some point. This will be on a backburner for now I think.

At one time I did wonder if the William Sutcliffe mentioned was the father of my James Sutcliffe, former Mayor of Burnley. William Sutcliffe helped General Scarlett in his political campaign, and as you know, Scarlett commanded the charge of the Heavy Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. This was the same battle that William R. Sutcliffe was wounded in action.

I don’t think there is a connection as my William Sutcliffe was a weaver…..but I was excited for a while.
