69764 Gunner Maurice Hartley, DCM.
R.G.A. Awarded the D.C.M. in the London Gazette of 17 April 1918. Hartley was a native of Burnley, Lancashire.
The Burnley Express reported: -
MEDALS FROM MAYOR
Burnley Soldiers Awards For Gallantry
Yesterday in the mayor's parlour at the Town Hall two medals for bravery won on the battlefield were presented to Burnley soldiers by the mayor Alderman R. Hargreaves, J.P. One of the recipients was 69764 Gunner Maurice Hartley of the Royal Garrison Artillery, son of Mr. James Hartley, Ebenezer Baptist Church Choirmaster of 120 Brougham Street, Burnley. He was captured by the Germans at Cambrai in 1917, and was a prisoner of war at Minden, Germany until recently.
The citation for the D.C.M. published in the London Gazette reads, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He has shown great devotion to duty as a linesman, and as at all times been cheerful and ready to undertake dangerous work of all kinds.".
