39945 Private William Yoxall, MM.
1/5th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Awarded the M.M., in the London Gazette of 21/10/1918. Yoxall was a native of Brierfield, Lancashire.
Although a native of Brierfield, Yoxall spent most of his life living in Burnley, Lancashire where he had his own grocery business.
The Burnley News and the Burnley Express of 26 September 1917 reported :-
On Saturday, there passed away at his home 24, St. James's Street. Mr. Moses Yoxall who had been in failing health for sometime. The deceased was one of the pioneers of co-operation in Brierfield, serving on the committee for a long period of years. He leaves a widow and six sons (four who are on active service) and four daughters. He was 79 years of age. (The Burnley Express says aged 70 years).
The Burnley Express of 1 February 1957 reports:-
Mr. H. Yoxall.
Mr. William Yoxall, of 313, Briercliffe Road, Burnley, a director of H. Yoxall Ltd., Burnley Grocers, died in the General Hospital on Friday 25 January aged 67 years. He leaves a widow (Edith) and a daughter. A native of Burnley (sic), he had been in the grocery business for nearly all his working life. For many years he was an elder of Angle Street Baptist Chapel and was a Sunday School teacher there for over forty years. Mr. Yoxall was awarded the Military Medal for service in France during the First World War with the East Lancashire Regiment. The funeral took place yesterday at Haggate after a service at the Angle Street Baptist Chapel. At their meeting on Monday, the Burnley and District Grocer's Association decided to send a letter of condolence to Mrs. Yoxall.
