Leaver,

The National Archives link takes you to an entry in their index: the referenced document looks to me like an application for registering copyright of the photograph - but that's just my best guess!

I see in the 1881 Census (Burnley District 13, page 34) 25 Bridge St is occupied by the family of one John Heys, General Dealer: in the 1896 Trade Directory, it's the address of Benjamin Moore, Letterpress Printer. Perhaps the Burnley Photo Co was short-lived, or perhaps 25 Bridge St was used as an accommodation address.

Many thanks to Mr Kelly for sharing them with us.

In his email, he includes the following memory

"My parents owned a small shop in Granville St. so the clatter of clogs was my alarm clock as the weavers went to work of course only men had their clogs "ironed" making the noise. Long trousers and having your clogs changed from rubber to iron was a sure indicator of maturity"

Brierfield FC? Isn’t that a New Zealand flag the man is holding?

Perhaps the guy came from New Zealand and just likes to fly the flag. Or perhaps he was a linesman and they had no other flags to use :?

Looks like it might not be Brierfield in Lancashire then?

On closer inspection, it cannot be the New Zealand flag, because the NZ flag has stars with 5 points, and the flag in the photo has stars with 6 points.

NZ flag

and it doesn’t look like an Australian flag, even with its variations.
