It's obviously not too relevant then. As long as we were not missing anything important!!

DNA CONTROVERSIES CONTINUE
Regular readers will know that I've long been concerned about the way in which DNA tests are marketed, and last month the American Society of Human Genetics set out their concerns in a statement http://www.ashg.org/pdf/ASHGAncestryTestingStatement_FINAL.pdf
My advice is to use DNA analysis only to answer specific questions such as "Do these two males with the same surname share a common paternal ancestor?" unless you have read the ASHG statement and understand it.

I receive these emails periodically. If you are interested, you can use my log in to see people who match my Y-DNA (male line). You might notice that many of the matches are Scandinavian and this would explain my imposing stature, muscular frame and Viking looks.

An exact 12 marker match has been found between you and another person in the Family Tree DNA database.

You and the other person match in all 12 loci. If you share the same surname or variant, this means that there is a 99% likelihood that you share a common ancestor in a genealogical time frame. If you match another person without the same surname or variant, you still probably share a common ancestor, but this ancestor most likely lived in the time before surnames were adopted.

The link below will take you to your Family Tree DNA Login. From there, click on the "Y-DNA Matches" tab to see a list of your matches. Newer matches will be at the top of the list. Additional emails will be sent to you as we find new matches between you and your "genetic cousins."

Follow the link below and type in your Kit Number and Password to access your personal page

Your Kit Number is N51709
Your Password is S1058

Please remember to add your results to Ysearch.org, the FTDNA-sponsored public database. Go to the Y-DNA Matches tab and you will see an explanation and a link for the upload.

Well certainly it would explain your name. Beyond that -

"Berserkers (or Berserks) were Norse warriors who wore coats of wolf or bear skin and were commonly understood to have fought in an uncontrollable rage or trance of fury, hence the modern word berserk."

S'pose he just might with those genes . . .

Viking DNA tests in Cumbria

RESIDENTS are being invited to take part in a study to see if viking blood once ran through their ancestors veins.
Scientists are undertaking a study to map the extent of Viking ancestory in men who live in the north of England and are looking for volunteers for the study.
Researchers want to recruit male volunteers whose father’s father was born in Cumbria, Lancashire, Cheshire, North Yorkshire, Durham or Northumberland.
“As well as analysing the Y chromosomes, we are also interesed in the surnames, because they are passed down the generations in the same way,” said researcher Dr Turi King.
Sampling is done by post and involves brushing the inside of the cheek and men interested should email Turi King at surnames@le.ac.uk or call 07512586493.

Dr Jobling Traces Viking DNA
February 22nd, 2009 | Posted in Viking DNA
Professor Mark Jobling of Leicester University, who now seems to be the ultimate authority on Viking bloodlines in northern England within the national project to create a genetic map of the UK, has launched a new exciting study. Men whose fathers’ fathers were born in Cumbria, Lancashire, Cheshire, North Yorkshire, Durham or Northumberland are wanted to take part in it. Special attention is paid to people with such local surnames as Borrowdale, Branthwaite, Haygarth, Oldcorn, Satterthwaite and Thornthwaite. However, all eligible volunteers will be sent DNA sample kits in order to determine if they have Viking heritage. Professor Jobling formulated the aim of the study as follows: “What we want to end up with is a map of the north of Britain showing where the Vikings were concentrated and distinguishing between the Norse Vikings who landed in the west and the Danish Vikings to the east.” The research associate Dr Turi King comments: “The East Midlands is a particularly important area as it formed the heartlands of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia and large parts also fell within the area of the Danelaw, an area dominated Danish Vikings during the 9th and 10th centuries.” How Vikings affected this area is evident in such placenames as Flimby, Birkby, Crosby, Allerby and Dovenby, but the effect on genetics thus far has been less clear. The initiative is part of The People of the British Isles project headed by Professor Sir Walter Bodmer at the University of Oxford. The recently launched research on Viking DNA in Northern England is funded by the Wellcome Trust and forms part of the grant “What’s in a name? Applying patrilineal surnames to forensics, population history, and genetic epidemiology.” It will help to discover the genetic impact of the Angles, Saxons and Vikings on present day Britain. It is important that some of such genetic variation contributes to inherited differences in susceptibility to cancer and heart disease. The study will continue until late 2010, after which the results will be published.
