This sounds a bit of a stupid question, but, if I link my tree to my DNA does that make it public, or just to the DNA contacts??

No, it will still remain private. As long as your privacy settings are 'private'. I've linked my DNA to my tree. It makes it easier to see where you are connected...especially when others have their tree shared

Mine originally said end of January and then the processing started at the beginning of the week and the DNA matches started to appear towards the end of the week. This morning my raw data was available so I have downloaded it and uploaded it to FindmyPast (which goes off to LivingDNA when you select the DNA option), MyHeritage, GEDmatch and FamilyTreeDNA. They take a little while for their processing.

I found the ethnicity interesting. I am 60ish percent England/Wales with Midlands and Lancashire being the 2 regions I'm linked to. I am also 32% Irish. I found the percentage a surprise, would have expected it to be much lower but it also narrows down the area to East Mayo, West & North Roscommon. Both are counties mentioned on census forms but I have always drawn a blank when looking for anything in these counties. This will perhaps narrow down the search area. Well, it certainly gives me a target area as a starting point. The main reason I took the test was to hopefully break down my Irish walls.

I've been stuck for a while on my Irish ancestors, the problem being lots of the registers were destroyed.
Something to note, and very useful, lots of Irish graveyards have lists of those interred near the entrance, makes life a lot easier.

That's interesting. I've never been to Ireland.

As my lot were Catholic, I do stand a chance of finding some registers as the Catholic churches tended to hang on to their registers so they were not destroyed with census etc. That's assuming I can locate the right area/village

I can't go past a grave yard in Ireland without reading the list. I'm over there again this summer around Galway if you want me to look for a name in any graveyards I come across.

Just another pointer on the tree sharing. I've still got mine set to private but it is searchable. That way I get the 'common ancestor' info and also the thrulines info that they provide. That's interesting though I've not had time to look at it in depth yet

Mayo and Roscommon share borders with Galway. I will be in touch before we go and you can give me some surnames if you want. It's easy enough to look for another surname on a list when looking anyway. We don't go to Ireland for family history purposes but it wouldn't be right to walk past a graveyard without having a quick look. One day, I'll find something significant.
