JOHN JACK YATES DIED 1/6/1917,AGED 55.BURNLEYS FIRST EVER INTERNATIONAL PLAYER PASSED AWAY AT HIS HOME IN BURNLEY AFTER A LONG ILLNESS.YATES WAS BORN IN BLACKBURN AND WAS A COTTON WEAVER,PLAYING HIS EARLY FOOTBALL WITH BLACKBURN OLYMPIC.THIS TEAM OF WORKING MEN ASTOUNDED THE FOOTBALL ESTABLISHMENT IN 1883 BY NOT ONLY REACHING THE FA CUP FINAL,BUT BEATING THE HOLDERS,THE OLD ETONIANS,TO BRING THE FAMOUS OLD TROPHY TO THE NORTH OF ENGLAND FOR THE FIRST TIME.AFTER A SPELL WITH ACCRINGTON ,YATES MOVED TO TURF MOOR READY FOR THE ADVENT OF LEAGUE FOOTBALL AND TOOK HIS PLACE IN THE BURNLEY SIDE ON THAT HISTORIC DAY AT PRESTON IN SEPTEMBER 1888.HIS FORM WAS INSPIRED THROUGHOUT THAT INAUGURAL LEAGUE CAMPAIGN AND HIS SHEER CONSISTENCY LED TO THE FULL ENGLAND SIDE TO PLAY IRELAND AT ANFIELD IN MARCH 1889.HE SCORED THREE GOALS IN A 6 V 1 VICTORY,EARNING A UNIQUE PLACE IN BURNLEY FC HISTORY,BUT WAS NEVER CHOSEN FOR HIS COUNTRY AGAIN.IN LATER YEARS HE PLAYED AS AN AMATEUR AND BECAME THE LICENSEE AT THE BRICKMAKERS ARMS IN THE SHADOW OF TURF MOOR.R I P

2;A NEWSPAPER CLIPPING WITH A LETTER REGARDING HIS INTERNATIONAL CAP WITH A REPLY ALL ABOUT JACK YATES,AND PICTURE.

JACK YATES AS HE WAS KNOWN WAS A COMPLETE HERO TO ALL THAT KNEW HIM AND TO HAVE A SIGNATURE OF A MAN WHO PLAYED IN THE 1883 CUP FINAL IS A FANTASTIC PIECE OF FOOTBALL MEMORABILIA.he also played in burnleys first match v preston 8/9/1888
