Maureen, I have no idea. I wonder if Henry died before the 1841 census because I cannot find any records for him.

Have you skipped a year and looked in 1851?

Haggate

There is a Mary Leaver without a hubby on the above 1841 census page - 2 kids with her.

I have had a look at the Haggate burials. There is no Henry Leaver (any spelling) buried there between 1831 and 1841 but he could be somewhere else of course!

If this is the right Mary, then Henry appears to have died between, say, 1839 & 1841.
I can't find a death in Burnley, although there are a coupple of Henry Levers in Bury 1840.
I found Tabitha's birth on Lancs bmd, 1840
Looks like I might have to go back to the library and check out deaths and baptisms from 1831 on.

Was there a war or anything that could have taken him away from home?

Was he away from home that night anyway? I searched for Mary - not Henry.

Has there ever been a period in modern history when there has not been a war?

You got there before me Kris. I just looked up all the same info.
Anyway, it doesn't look like this is our Henry's widow. As Mel says, it looks like an unmarried mother.

I'm sure I've been down this road before as I recognise some of the details I've just unearthed.
Tabitha appears on 1851 at Haggate with her grandmother. Trouble is it's a poor image and the names of her and her grandmother have been mis-transcribed.

Piece: 2251; Folio: 104; Page: 15
Haggate
Mary Rackser*, head, wid, 67, born Briercliffe
Tabatha Davis,** gr'daur, 12, born Briercliffe
Alen*** Lord, daur, 25, handloom weaver cotton, born Briercliffe
James Lord, son-in-law, 28, handloom weaver cotton, born Briercliffe
James Lord, gr'son 1 , born Briercliffe
John Lord, gr'son 4 , born Briercliffe
Robert Lord, gr'son 2days, born Briercliffe

*this should read 'Jackson'
**this should read 'Leaver'
***This should read 'Ellen'
So it looks like the father of Mary's child was a Jackson.

The Jackson family are at Haggate in 1841 with a 20-year old Tabatha, so that's obviously where the name came from.

Hiya Kris, I have Burrow's and Burrell's in my family, but don't recognise those Christian names, wonder if they were related somewhere along the line.
Stephanie.
