Briercliffe
Military Wedding

A quiet little wedding took place at Hill-lane Baptist Church, Briercliffe, between Pte. Robt. Clough Houghton, of the 1/5 East Lancashire Regiment, and Miss Amanda Winnard. The bride's brother, the Rev. E. Winnard of Barnoldswick, was the officiating minister. After the wedding the party made their way to Thursden Cottage, Briercliffe, where the bride lives with her sister, Mrs. Wilkinson, whose husband is serving with the colours. Pte. R. C. Houghton is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Houghton, of 9 Lee-street. The bride is the second daughter of Mrs. Winnard of 10, Lindsay-street, Burnley. Mrs. Wilkinson (the bride's sister) was the bridesmaid. Pte. R. C. Houghton's grandfather (74 years old) was the best man. The bridegroom has been on active service three years. He was slightly wounded in a bayonet charge at the Dardanelles, and has suffered from shell shock.
