I am trying to find out about a Robert Taylor who on the marriage of John Halstead (a weaver residing at Lane Bottom) to Mary Hartley ( a weaver residing at Higher House) on 4th March 1852 was declared as father of John Halstead and a farmer.
Does this possibly make the mothers name Halstead?
The witnesses to the marriage were a Thomas and Nanny Taylor whose maiden name I think was Kippax. I have sent off for their marriage certificate to hopefully confirm this and their connection with Robert Taylor.
The 1851 census gives Thomas and Nanny Taylor living with a Robert and Mary Kippax at Lane Bottom, Barker Row? Briercliffe. Their relation to the head householder was son-i-law and daughter-i-law? mistake on census takers part?

Hi Graham,
I have a Robert Kippax born 1810, who has a sister Nanny born 1819.
As far as I know Robert and his brother William never married, they are in the same grave at Haggate.
In 1861 they (Robert and William) are both living with their mother Sarah in Lane Bottom as unmarried.
In 1851 Robert and William are in the same house with sister Susan Nuttall and her son James, also mother Sarah who is head. They are living on Barker Row, Lane Bottom.

Hi The marriage certificate came today, Thomas Taylor did marry a Nanny Kippax 14th Dec 1850 and her father was Robert Kippax with whom they must have been staying with on the 1851 census. So the census taker should have recorded as son-i-law and daughter. Unfortunately Thomas Taylor's father is down as a Robert Thornton so I am no closer in finding the Robert Taylor declared as John Halstead's father. I must have the correct pair because each couple acted as witnesses to each others wedding. Thos. Taylor's residence was down as Holt Hill, Briercliffe, does anyone know where that is please?

Yes I know where it is. If you know Briercliffe, go down through Lane Bottom, up past Hill Lane Chapel on your left, and you come to a row of old cottages on your right, that is Holt Hill.

Holt Hill is between Hill Farm and Holt Hill Farm. You can see it on "birds eye".

Hi Gloria,
Not sure if your Robert Kippax is the same as mine, on the 1851 census he is 54, that puts him born 1797 and his wife Mary aged 44, plenty of children, James (20), Margret (18), John (12), Robert (5).
William (56) and Benjamin (51) Kippax as lodgers and Elijah (1) grandson

Hi Graham, I'm not sure where you are based but it might be worth taking a look at the Poor Law records for the time of the birth of John Halstead. It could be that he was illegitimate, and that the mother applied to the Union for financial help. Often, this will name the father as the Union will try to get the money out of him. It may also have resulted in a mention at the Petty or Quarter Sessions. I think all of these records can be found at the Lancashire Record Office and a large portion of them are included in a searchable online index at http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/education/ ... alogue.asp

Not guaranteed to be there though unfortunately.
