Sudden Death

On the morning of Saturday last, a nail and bolt maker, named Elijah Lavender, fell down dead while engaged in his usual work at the anvil. He was employed at the smithy belonging to Thomas and James Lavender, at Pickup Croft, and at the time of his death was making nails on his own account. For some time previously he had indulged in liquor, and during the last fortnight had only been at work a few days. On the morning of his death he appeared to be sober, but not in his usual health, and had only worked a few minutes when he fell down dead. An inquest was held on view of the body on Monday last, at the Commercial Inn, Burnley, and a verdict returned of "Died by the visitation of God; but the jurors are of opinion that the intemperate habits of the said Elijah Lavender, had produced in him a state of health which may have accelerated his death." He was about 35 years of age, and has left a wife and three children in very distressed circumstances.
