DEPRESSION LEADS TO SUICIDE
At an inquest last Wednesday on Jonathan Catlow (45), joiner’s labourer, 5 Cobden street, Nelson, who was found gassed in his home the previous day, it was stated that on Monday night he visited a doctor, who told him to see a nerve specialist.
Bessie Catlow said that her husband had been employed by the Nelson Corporation for the last 14 years. He was healthy and active until last August, when he came off work complaining of stiffness in his legs and numbness. This had been progressive since 1934. He believed it was the result of an injury in 1929, when he was struck by a falling piece of timber whilst following his employment. Ever since he had been periodically examined, but had not received any compensation. On Monday he saw a doctor, who advised him to visit a nerve specialist in Manchester. When he came home he did not seem unusually depressed, but said that perhaps it would be the best, because he would then know something definite. On Tuesday morning he got up at 6-30 and made tea for the family, and seemed in his usual health. At ten o’clock he went for some currants for her, and later he proceeded to make a fitting for the fanlight window. She went out while he was doing that job. Returning half an hour later she found him lying face downwards in the back kitchen, with a flexible gas tube near his mouth. She turned off the gas, opened the doors and sent for a doctor and neighbour, who tried artificial respiration. The doctor pronounced life extinct. Her husband had never threatened to take his life, but he had been very depressed about his condition.
P.C. Millner said that he found a note left by Catlow which read: “Good-bye, everybody.”
Returning a verdict of “suicide whilst not of sound mind,” the Coroner said that it was certain something had happened which affected Catlow physically and had very depressing effect o his mind.

Death of Mrs. Emma Catlow
Many residents in the Gannow district will learn with regret of the death of Mrs. Emma Catlow, widow of Mr. James Catlow, who predeceased her three years ago. Mrs. Catlow, who was 63 years of age, was an inmate of the colonel Slater Homes at Lanehead. Her death followed an operation. she was of a most genial disposition and her demise will be regretted by a large circle of friends in the Gannow and Harle Syke districts.

CATLOW Stephen Peacefully in The Royal Blackburn Hospital on Monday, March 1st, 2010, and after a courageous fight against his illness, Stephen, aged 45 years, precious son of Francess and Brian, special loving brother of Kevin, dear brother-in-law to Mandy, fun loving uncle of Rebecca and Jamie, dearly loved nephew of Dot, Brian, Roy and Zoe, much loved cousin of Tracy, Yvonne, Tia and Sharney, and a great friend to many who will be sadly missed, especially by his closest friends Fred and Craig. At rest in The Alderson and Horan Funeral Home. Stephen’s funeral cortege will leave from his home on Tuesday, March 9th at 11-30 a.m. for service and cremation at Burnley Crematorium, 12 noon. DEATH OF MR. SAMUEL CATLOW.- Early yesterday morning the death took place at the Victoria Hospital of Mr. Samuel Catlow, Netherby-st., manager for Coun. Luke Thornber, cotton manufacturer, and brother of Mrs. Thornber. Mr. Catlow, who died after an operation, was 60 years of age. He leaves a widow and two sons, Messers. Tom and Louis Catlow, one of whom is in the Army and the other in the Navy. In politics Mr. Catlow was a Liberal, and for some time, he was chairman of the Gannow ward Committee. He was attached to Brunswick United Methodist Church. He was the eldest son of the late Christopher Catlow, of Butterworth and Dickinson’s. His many friends, who held him in high esteem, will regret to learn of his death.
