Railwayman's Death

Funeral of Burnley Clubman

A well-known Burnley railway worker, Mr. William Duerden, died at his home, 13, Nicholl-street, last week, aged 43, following a long illness. For 29 years he had been employed as a shipping clerk at Bank Top Station, For many years he was an active member of Robinson-street Working Men's Club, having served for a long period as secretary. During the past eight years he had been a prominent member of Danehouse Unionist Club. In his younger days, Mr. Duerden was connected with St John's Church, Gannow. He is survived by a widow, two sons and one daughter. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon. The Rev. P. A. Lee, vicar of St Cuthbert's Church, offered prayers at the home and also officiated at the services at the church and at the graveside, at the Burnley Cemetery. The funeral cortege made a short halt at the Burnley Bank Top goods yard, where many fellow workers of Mr. Duerden assembled with bared heads to pay their last respects.
The following representatives were in attendance at the funeral:- L.M.S., Bank Top Station, Messrs. J. E. Rigby, H. J. Dent, J. O. Edwards and Miss E. Heyworth; Danehouse Conservative Club, Messrs. W. E. Simpson, F. Baldwin and R. Robinson; Robinson-street Working Men's Club, Mr. George Haworth.

H. Howarth and Sons and Mr. Thornton; Mrs. Judson; Mr. and Mrs. George Haworth and family; Mr. and Mrs. Hodge and Winne; little Percy; Mr. and Mrs. Robinson; Mr. and Mrs. F. Baldwin; Freddie and Will; Joe Jackson and family; Mrs. Woolley.
Burnley Co-op. Society carried out the arrangements.

Link With Old Extwistle

Late Mrs. Duerden

The death occurred last Monday of Mrs. Nancy Duerden, wife of Richard Duerden, of 17, Burnley-road, Briercliffe, aged 63 years, who was well-known in the village. She was a native of Extwistle, and the daughter of the late Mr. James Pickles, who will be remember by all old Briercliffe people as the former engineer at the now disused Extwistle Mill and subsequently engineer at Briercliffe Mill, when that mill commenced operations about fifty years ago. Mrs. Duerden had been a member of the Haggate Chapel since 1890/ She leaves a husband, son, and two grandchildren.
Amid many manifestations of regret, the funeral took place in the Haggate Baptist Churchyard last Thursday. Messrs. James Halstead (senior) and James Halstead (junior) officiated. Bythel, Miss N. Hargreaves, Mrs. W. Bythel, Mrs. Hargreaves, Mrs. W. E. Taylor, Mrs. T. Greenwood, Mrs. J. Duerden, Mrs. W. T. Duerden, Miss D. Duerden, Mrs. W. Watson, Mrs. V. Pomfret, Mrs. Joseph Pickles, Mrs. S. Pickles, Mr. W. Halstead, Mrs. W. Nuttall, Mrs. J. E. Leaver, Mrs. Tatham, Mrs. Brown, Mrs. H. Hirst, Mrs. G. Nuttall, Mr. J. Halstead (senior), and Mr. J. Found Dead In A field

Robert Duerden, of High-sim, in the township of Briercliffe, was found dead in a field near to the Cold Well public-house, Briercliffe, on Sunday afternoon last. The deceased had been to the Cold Well public-house with Hartley Stuttard, and they had been there until half-past two o'clock in the afternoon, when they went away towards home, but the deceased lingered behind, and was left by Stuttard. The deceased was seen standing alone in the field, and afterwards near to the same place he was found laid down quite dead. He was 54 years of age, and an inquest was held. Verdict accordingly.

Hi Mel, Thanks for the Duerden deaths. I've just found my Gt Uncle. Never knew he had a son.

I'm just browsing the British Newspaper Archive lately to see if there is anything relevant. I keep finding the odd article here and there. There are a couple of stories that were in the Burnley papers in the early 1900's that I'd love to add but I think, for now, it would be a little too time consuming and I want to get the new site live soon. Just waiting for hubby to do his next bit on it.
