Burnley News, 7 Dec 1929 VILLAGE TRIBUTES Funeral of Mrs. J. H. Heap at Worsthorne. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon at St John’s Church, Worsthorne, of Mrs. James H. Heap, of the Bay Horse Hotel, Worsthorne, whose death was reported in our Wednesday issue. The home service and the service at St John’s Church were taken by the vicar at Worsthorne, the Rev. H. Stones, M.A. A large number of mourners assembled at the Bay Horse Hotel to pay their last tribute to Mrs. Heap, who was held in high esteem among a large circle of friends. Among the many mourners were representatives from the Burnley and District Licensed Victuallers Association and also from the Harmony (Todmorden) Lodge of Freemasons, of which lodge Mrs. Heap’s late husband was a Past Master and a Provincial Officer. The coffin was carried to the church by the following bearers: Messrs H.L. Whit-? , A. Sagar, Tom Whittam, Councillors A. H. Pickles, H. B. Duerden and G. E. Benyon. The path between the lych gate and the church was lined by the members of the Worsthorne branch of the Women’s Help Society, of which Mrs. Heap was a member. As the funeral party entered the church, Mr. A. E. Bridge, a former organist of Worsthorne Parish Church, played on the organ “O, rest in the Lord,” and also accompanied the service, which included the singing of the hymn “Abide with Me,” which was a favourite of the deceased. As the coffin was borne to its last resting-place the organist played Chopin’s Funeral March. Burnley Express and Advertiser, 4 Dec 1929 WORSTHORNE DEATH OF MRS. HEAP. – The death took place last Monday of Mrs. Heap, widow of the late James Hargreaves Heap, at her residence, the Bay Horse Hotel. Mrs. Heap had resided here during the past 29 years, and was held in high esteem for her kindly disposition. She was connected with St John’s Church, and was a member of the Women’s Help Society. Although having been in indifferent health for some years, her end came as a great shock to her bereaved family and her large circle of friends as she was out during the week, only taking to her bed last Thursday. She is survived by two married daughters, both of whom reside in the village. The interment takes place this afternoon in St John’s Churchyard. Martin Whittaker |
