I've just been listening to a National Archives podcast about Friendly Societies and Burial Clubs.
There was a weakness in Civil Registration that to register a birth or death (unlike a baptism or burial), a baby/body did not have to produced. A cert would be issued just on the informants say so! Fictitious deaths were registered before the Civil Registration Act of 1874, these still exist in the indexes and certified copies can be ordered. (The Act of 1874 meant a medical certificate had to be provided when registering a death.)

Has anyone come across this...found a death certificate for a relative who was actually still living. I suppose the only way to know they were still living is if more children were born after the death was registered or if the person appears on the following census.
