Hi there, I was wondering if anybody can help. I was looking at the listing for Burnley Cemetry in this thread and noticed the name of a possible relative, so I ordered a detailed report from another online service of all burials in that cemetry and the name I was looking for, Flora Redman, is not on the report I recieved. Does the author of the thread have any more information about the burial plots or can in fact confirm that they are definitely Burnley Cemetry. With kind thanks.

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum. The details on this thread are definitely from Burnley Cemetery, Kris sent them to me for addition to the forum.

The other site that you have had your report from, did they say they were giving you burials or Monumental Inscriptions? An MI can only be recorded if a stone is standing - if the report is of MI's then the person of interest to you does not have a gravestone.

Hi Mel, and thanks for the welcome. Yes, it was a list of inscriptions, which would make sense if there is no actual grave stone. Where did Kris get the info from, if you don't mind me asking, I know that my ancestors lived on that street so it seems to tie-in with my research so far. Thanks again for your help:)

Hi Rob, the information came from Burnley cemetery. If you mail Burnley cemetery with the name and date of burial etc, they will supply the grave details ie. Who purchased the plot, the date of purchase, and people buried in the grave.

Thanks, leaver and mel, I did mail them and I was given the info you mentioned. Just wanted to ask you folks about researching at the Lancashire Records Office - would it be worth my while spending a few days there and do you know what sort of things I would benefit most from looking at that are not available on census? I have a subscription to the online census and I've gone as far as I can go I think and can't quite get any further back on certain people, although I'm eagerly awaiting yet another birth cert through the post at the moment.

It depends on what you want out of your research Rob.

The LRO has all sorts of info. Have you searched their catalogue? http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/education/ ... alogue.asp

Type in the surname of interest and you get all kinds of results.

They have will indexes, poor law records, assizes records (I think) as well as some parish records.....the list is endless. It's worth emailing to make sure they have the records for a specific area of interest as I have been left frustrated a couple of times. There are some things at Burnley and not Preston and vice versa.

If you are wanting to go back beyond census and civil registration then you probably would want parish records. You'll need to have an idea of which parish your lot belonged to.

Pencils only, you can't take bags or folders into the research room. There are lockers provided for your belongings. I can't remember if you need a £1 (returnable) for them. You can take paperwork in with you in a clear plastic A4 (or bigger) wallet. If you haven't been before and do not have a CARN readers ticket, take 2 forms of ID with you.
You can use a digital camera for a small charge. Well worth it if you find lots of info you wish to copy.

I agree with Mel, you really need to know what you are looking for, otherwise you will get sidetracked and you won’t find very much.

I prefer the Burnley library because I enjoy looking through the Burnley express newspapers.

Have you searched the Lancashire lantern website? http://www.lantern.lancashire.gov.uk/
You will probably find something of interest under “local resources”.

Thanks for the great info and all the pointers on what you can and can't do - I never realised it was so strict like that. I'm only about 2 hours drive away, so it's not that far really. Sounds like they'e got a great collection of stuff there, mind. I suppose I would be interested in the parish records pre-census and then after that I guess I would just be looking for anything that would give me addresses, locations, any clues about lifestyle etc to help me piece a picture together. I will try those links and see what I can find there. For instance, I looked up the WW1 military records recently and found two ancestors and those records gave me an amazing glut of information inbetween census returns about where they were living, occupations and all sorts of stuff. I'm really trying to build the tree first and foremost, then fill out the finer details with anything else I can find. I've shelled out quite a bit of money on birth and marriage certificates which have been invaluable in my search so far, so I don't mind going that bit further if it gets me the result. I was just interested in what exactly is in the LRO and where perhaps I might start digging. You're all very helpful. Thanks so much and I hope you don't mind me asking so many questions

Keep firing away Rob. I think I speak on behalf of all the members that if we can help, we will.

The catalogue proves extremely useful if you have to travel . I'm a little closer to the LRO than you - about 1 (and a bit) hours away - Staffordshire.

Don't discount parish records during the census. It can lead to children that have born and died in the 10 year gap but also children that were born just after one census, living with an unknown relation during the next and married off by the following census.

Also, before buying more certificates - the marriages in the parish records (after 1837) show the same detail as a marriage certificate that costs £7. A printout from the archives is far cheaper!
I always check this site http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ for marriages, it often gives the church so it's just a matter of checking 1 year of church records at the named church. If you cross-check it with Freebmd, you can narrow it down to a quarter.
The site mentioned also gives age at death for the early indexes. Something the GRO index and ultimately Freebmd doesn't do before about 1865. If there are a couple of possibilities, you can again discount the odd one if the age is way out of the range you were interested in.
