More on PICKLES WEST, his Father, Grandfather and Great Grand Father EDMUND WEST Great Grand Father Edmund West was born in 1752. He married Ellen Butterworth birth date about 1752.I think it is most probable that they lived at Worsthorne. A child Edmund West was born in 1786 in Worsthorne, he became a grocer in Burnley. John West was born about 1794, by this time they had moved to Haggate, Briercliffe. Ellen died 16th Sept 1813 and Edmund died 29th Dec 1832. JOHN WEST Grandfather John West was born around 1794, on the 7th of Jan. 1821 he married Betty Jackson and they lived at Haggate, Briercliffe. Betty’s father John was born at Hurstwood in 1763. They had 6 traceable children: Thomas 1821 Ellen 1822. Her children created a business dynasty of Weaving Mills in Harle Syke and Burnley. Nanny 1829 Unmarried. Mary 1833 Unmarried. Edmund West 1836. . William 1838, died 2nd Oct. 1842 Betty Jackson died 22nd Oct 1839 and John West died 13th Oct 1844. EDMUND WEST Father Edmund West was born in 1836. In 1851 Edmund, age 15, lived at Spencer Row, Haggate with his sister Ellen who was married to John Simpson, and with his sister Mary and brother Thomas. The Census says that he was a handloom weaver. On the 30th of April 1859 Edmund married Elizabeth Whitaker, she had been married before and her maiden name was Taylor. She had had three children during her first marriage to John Whitaker, Hannah, Ellen and Richard. Elizabeth came from Holt Hill and John Whitaker from High Sim, both places in Briercliffe. I assume John died for her to marry again. Elizabeth was five years older than Edmund. In 1861 they were living at Haggate next door but one to Ellen. John West their first son was 1 year old, her three other children were living there. Edmund had three children: 1. John b.1860, he married Ruth Heap b.1860, in 1877, they had 5 children. 2. Pickles West b.1862. 3. Thomas b.1864 In 1871 Elizabeth lived at South View with five children Ellen, Richard, John, Pickles and Thomas, while Edmund was living with his sister Ellen and family at Tattersall Barn. In 1881 Edmund was lodging with Sarah Heap (79) on the Cop Row. Sarah was Ruth Heap’s Grandmother. Elizabeth was still at South View but now calls herself Taylor, she lives with Pickles and Thomas. In 1891 Edmund is living on his own at 198 Briercliffe Rd (Cop Row). Elizabeth (60) is still at South View living with Thomas (27) and her sister Mary Taylor (74) In 1901 Edmund is living with Thomas at 208 Briercliffe Rd. It seems that he was a weaver, poor, all his life while his sisters sons became rich mill owners. I think he must have been the black sheep of the West family. Edmund died in October 1903 (67) and was the first to be buried in the family grave bought by his son Pickles at St James Briercliffe. Elizabeth died on the 21st Nov 1894, she is buried with her son Richard Whitaker at Haggate. PICKLES WEST Pickles West was born in 1862. An odd name, but Elizabeth his mother had a brother called Pickles Taylor, he went to America. Elizabeth’s Grandmother was Mary Pickles. In 1881 Pickles was living at South View. In the spring of 1885 he married Sophia Sagar, b. 17 Feb 1865, she was the landlords daughter of the Commercial Inn, which was the first house on the Cop Row. Sophia was born at Roggerham Gate Inn. I was told that they had 12 children, 6 of which died in childhood. I have only been able to trace 11, they are: 1. Arthur b. 1883 which would appear to be two years before they were married. I know that Arthur is their son because Arthur and Alban were baptised on the same day 20 June 1886. 2. Alban Edwin b. 1886, married Amy Howarth in1908, they had three children, Walter, Rena and Maretta. Alban d.30 Dec 1965 age 79. 3. Elizabeth Hannah b. 1888. bapt. 26 Feb 1888. d. Mar 1888 4. John Sagar b. 1890, d. Jan 1929 age 39, m. Lily Banks July 1914. They had 1 son, James Pickles b. 1917, he died age 18. 5. Walter West b. 10 Sept 1891. In 1915 he married Hetty Graves b. 4 April 1892, a girl from Lane Bottom, 6. Mary bur.6 Jun 1894 age 3 months. 7. Willie bur.6 Nov 1896 age 4 months. 8. Edith b. 1897, bur 1 Nov 1899 age 24 months. 9. Elizabeth b. 1900. Married Edward Sharp 1920, had 2 children. 10. Doris bur. 29Nov 1902 age 4 months. 11. Herbert b. Dec 1904. He married Elizabeth Hitchen in Oct 1930. They had 2 children Sheila and Geoffrey. Sheila became a teacher. Geoffrey became a loom overlooker and he emigrated with his family to New Zealand. When Pickles first married they lived on the Cop Row, 1886, and then they went to live with his mother at South View, the part which was now called Jubilee Terrace, 1888, then by the Census in 1891 it’s name had been changed to 62 Burnley Road which is what it is today. By 1896 he had moved to a new built terrace house on Upper Granville St. which by 1898 had been renamed Parker St. He lived there for the rest of his life. His brother John also lived on Parker St. Pickles in his younger days was a cricket fast bower and a notable runner. At 17 (1879) he was working as a loom gaiter at Stork Mill, then he worked as an overlooker at Harle Syke mill No. 1. In 1904 he moved to Harle Syke mill No 2 (Siberia) where he worked until he retired aged 72. Pickles died in March 1943 aged 80. Sophia died in August 1940 aged 75. Pickles was a small share holder in Harle Syke Mill and you could say he was one of those Sykers who owned their own house and the one next door. About Pickles West, taken from Th'Owd Syker Tommys Prize Pullet Four Sons As to other nicknames, one lady whose husband had the Christian name of Pickles, but got nothing else than "Mac", said she would call any sons that she had by plain names so they wouldn't get nicknames. She had four sons. John got nothing only "Giles"; Alban became "Mac"; Walter became "Tinker" and Herbert became "Wootton." |

thanks Jack for all this information on Pickles West, He was married to my great Aunt Sophia my gran was the daughter of her brother Abraham sagar . My mother worked with him and the rest of the family as a weaver . has for Arthur there eldest son Arthur Sagar West He Died Sept 19th 1918 in a casualty clearing centre of his wounds and is buried at Doingt Communal cemetery. sue foster |
