I have been trying to find the death record of my Great Grandfather Hartley Emmett/Emmott
His birth was 27/5/1852 in Burnley. I don't know which year he died, all I know that he was alive in 1914 at my grandmother Ethel Maud Emmotts marriage to Herbert Edward Smith.
Hartley was NOT the famous Mayor of Burnley and Mill Owner. He was by trade a Carter or Hackney Cab Proprietor. Hartley married my GGrandmother Ellen Foulds (Fowles) 17/11/1885.
I have sent for various death certificates and none so far have been him. I wonder if there would have been anything in the local papers ie an obituary. He and his family lived in Burnley all their lives. Can anyone help please?

Hi Linda, we3lcome to the forum.

The newspapers are held at Burnley library. They have an index, maybe if you emailed the library, they would check the index for you? Or, depending on where you are in the world - perhaps you could visit the library?

I have a friend who now lives in Lincs and every rememberance day I take a poppy to her Dads grave for her as she cant get there herself. Her Dad was Hartley Salmon and he suffered terribly in the forces during the war he was a POW, and I like his bravery to be aknowledged that is why I do this for her. To get to the point, he is buried in the same grave as his Grandparents and his Grandad was called Hartley Emmott!!!! Wonder if he could be related.

Stephanie.

We (Maureen and I) have Hartley Emmott (1825-1848) of Haggate, who was the child of Hartley Emmett (1786-1852) and Ellen Catlow (1788-1846).

Taken from a book title "Index to Local Newspapers" by Nadin, this book is on the shelves, downstairs, in Burnley library. (Date of death, not date of newspaper)

EMMOTT H Mr & Mrs 1905/10/10 Silver Wedding Anniversary
EMMOTT Hartley 1933/29/12 of Brierfield, inquest, accidental death. See Nelson Leader
EMMOTT Hartley 1914/19/8 died
EMMOTT Hartley 1925/8/8 died
EMMOTT Hartley Mrs 1924/21/12 death of

I have emailed these results to Linda.

I had an email from Linda last night. I'm not sure if any of the above helped but she spoke to Burnley library yesterday and they have provided her with details of when Hartley died, where he is buried and who bought the grave, also the last address. She is one happy bunny!
