:o What a strange coincidence!!! Traveling home on the bus past Queensgate on Tuesday I had a a temporary recall moment and planned to ask if any body knew the source of the name. I remember an old lady who was a distant friend of my family, she retired to a house behind Queensgate, I know, I'm getting to the point eventually  All i can remember is that she was a pub landlady in Burnley many, many years ago.

Getting back to my question, what does the name mean?

Certainly I'd always presumed it identified the owner of the surname as being a descendant of early inhabitants of the village of Diggle (near Mossley) in North Manchester.

I have a lot of the 'place name' sort of ancestry in my family tree - Oldhams, Charlesworths, etc.

I wonder if my family name of Tatham originated in Tatham village in the area of Tatham fells, which is in the Lancaster district of North Lancashire?

I read somewhere that Sutcliffe comes from 'South cliffe' but where the cliff is is not known

My great-aunt was Sarah Chippindale Diggle born 4-February 1888 in Accrington. She married Harry Townley 19-September 1810 in Central Falls, Rhode Island, USA. She lived for over 100 years; died 01-June-1989 Westerly, Rhode Island.

By coincidence Harry Townley was born 22-October1888 in the Diggle-Uppermill area of Saddleworth. Harry's mother was Caroline Andrew, who was also born in Saddleworth.

Was Sarah Chippendale Diggle's parents James Chippendale Diggle and Ann Matilda Ainsworth by any chance?

Patricia: The answer is yes. James and Ann would be her parents. Brad

Fantastic! I have been doing some research for a friend, Ann Matilda Ainsworth was her Great Aunt. You've just given me another leaf on the tree. Thanks.

Partricia: Great. If you have access to the U.S. Census, you can track Harry and Sarah through 1930. Her brother Harry Diggle lived in the same Pawtucket, RI household in the 1920 Census, Harry and Sarah's daughter, Irene, married Chon Day, a noted cartoonist for the Saturday Evening Post. I can provide you with more leads on this if you need additional help. Brad
