Death of Mr Dean

The death took place of Mr John Dean, on Whit-Monday, at the advanced age of 77. His wife pre-deceased him some 14 years ago. His family is one of the oldest in Nelson, dating back some 300 years to a period when Nelson, or Marsden, was a mere village. For more than 20 years he was a sidesman at St. John's Church, and also acted as warden for a number of years, taking an active part in the restoration of the church. He was an enthusiastic athlete in his younger days, and was also a member of the cricket team, acting as stumper when the field was near the centre of Nelson. The funeral took place on Thursday, at St. John's Church, where the Rev. J. Morgan officiated.

I've just realised I have Dean's in my family. The earliest I have recorded is Benjamin Dean who married Mary Cunliffe in Burnley in 1760, and the most recent Betty Dean who married James Mitchell in 1810. The latter are both buried in St Peter's Burnley.
