In Affectionate Remembrance of John, The beloved son of James and Ann Whittaker, of Cop Row, Who departed this life June 17th 1882, Aged 7 years And was interred at Hag-gate Chapel, June 20th. Afflictions sore long time I bore, Physicians were in vain; God thought it best that I should rest, And eased me of my pain. My wearied limbs are now at rest; Suffering and pain with me are o'er; I go to meet my friends whom God has blest, In heaven, where we shall part no more. This is a memorial card sent in by Susan Kerr. |

Burnley Express and News, June 23, 1943 MR. H. WHITAKER The death took place last Friday at his home, 96 Burnley-road, Harle Syke, of Mr. Herbert Whitaker (44), who was employed by the Walshaw Mill Co. until his illness seven years ago. Keenly interested in sport, he played with the Briercliffe team in the Tuesday Bowling League, and for a period acted as umpire in the Sunday School Cricket League. A staunch supporter of the Burnley F.C., he was also responsible for the training of Briercliffe St. James’s football team. He was a member of the Conservatives’ whist drive committee, and frequently acted as M.C. He saw service with the armed forces during the last war and was discharged owing to heart trouble. Sympathy is felt for his widow and four daughters in their loss. The Rev F. Jones, Vicar of St. Andrew’s offered prayers at the home and officiated at the internment in St. James’s burial ground yesterday (Tuesday). J. Atkinson, Harle Syke, carried out the arrangements. |

Express and Advertiser May 27, 1922 Sensation At Harle Syke Floor Collapses At Funeral The funeral of the late Mr. Thos. Whitaker, Saxifield-street, Harle Syke, whose death was recorded in our last issue, tok place on Wednesday afternoon. The body was enclosed in a massive solid oak panelled coffin, fitted with brass mountings, and the shield bore the inscription, "Thomas Whitaker, died May 21st, 1922, aged 55 years." Previous to leaving the residence of the deceased, Mr. James Ogden, the deacon of Haggate Baptist Chapel, conducted a short service in the house, there being about 25 to 30 relatives and friends assembled in the room, where, without warning the floor in one body collapsed. Fortunately, the house does not contain a cellar, or the consequences might have been more serious. The floor sank to a depth of about 18 inches, carrying everybody with it. After some moments' excitement, Mr. Pate, the undertaker, requested the minister to proceed with the service as if nothing had happened, which he did. The cortege then left for the Baptist Chapel, Haggate, and here the coffin was placed before the Communion rails, Mr. Ogden officiating, and also at the graveside. Amongst the relatives and friends assembled in the chapel was Mr. F Crossley, representing Lord Shuttleworth. There were a large number of floral emblems, and included: Wreath, "In loving remembrance of my dear husband and father, from his sorrowing family"; wreath, from Arthur and Mary Cross; wreath, from Mr. and Mrs. Holt and family; cross, from Mr. and Mrs. Ryan; wreath, from Mark; wreath, from all at West Marton; cross, from Bobbie and Elsie; spray, from Florence; wreath, "In loving memory of a dear brother, Will and Bella"; wreath, from Mr. Benson and family; harp, from Mr. and Mrs. Feather; cross, "In loving memory of a dear brother, from Mrs. Hoyle"; cross, Mrs. Gawthorpe and family. The arrangements were in the hands of Mr. T.H. Pate, Burnley-road, Padiham. |
