Death of a Veteran

The remains of the late Mr. Wm. Shackleton, of 10, Talbot-st., Harle Syke, were laid to rest on Thursday in the family vault at Haggate Baptist Church. The services were conducted by Messrs. Jas. Halstead, Robt. Shoesmith, and Geo. Nuttall. The deceased gentleman, who died on Saturday last, was in his 76th year, and is survived by his widow, one son, and one daughter. The son-in-law, Mr. Gilbert T. Starkie, who is serving with the B.E. Forces was unable to attend the funeral. Coming of an ancient family of yeoman farmers from the Widdop and Wadsworth side, the Shackletons were a notable race. The mourners were the widow, Mrs. Shackleton, Mr. John Shackleton, Consett (son), Mrs. G.T.Starkie (daughter), and Mrs. Wood (niece), Liversidge. The pall bearers were Mesrs. J. Woodhouse, A. Baldwin, F. Greenwood, R. Duerden, and Mr. F. Pickles. The arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Jno. Atkinson & Son, and the equipages were supplied by P. Eastwood, Ltd.

Late Mr. W. Shackleton.- A 60 years' membership of Hill-lane Baptist Church ended with the death of Mr. Willie Shackleton (82), of 36, Queen-street, Harle Syke. He was secretary of the church for 21 years, and served on the diaconate for many years. He also was superintendent and teacher in the Sunday school and gave a lifetime's service in the temperance cause. His wife died three years ago. He leaves a son and two daughters. The funeral takes place to-day at Hill-lane Baptist Church.
