Funeral of Mrs Sutcliffe
Amid many expressions of sympathy and regret, the funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon in the family vault at the Burnley Parish Church of Mrs. Sutcliffe, widow of Mr. Edward Sutcliffe, cotton manufacturer, formerly of Ighten House, Burnley. Mrs. Sutcliffe, who attended St. Peter's Church when in Burnley, and who was held in high respect, died on Friday at her residence, Sutton House, Long Sutton. From this place the body was removed for burial on Wednesday morning, and it arrived at Manchester-road Station early in the afternoon. It was accompanied by several mourners, and these were met at the station by others. The coffin having been removed from the train to a new Washington hearse, and the mourners having been accommodated in several carriages, the cortege left for the place of interment. Messrs. Collinge and Co., Ltd., had charge of the funeral arrangements, and on their behalf they were carried out by Mr. J. Lord. The body was enclosed in a leaden shell, and the coffin was of light panelled oak, with solid brass mountings, and bore the inscription: "Sarah Ann Sutcliffe, born July 25, 1837, died August 15, 1902." The Rev. J.A. Latham conducted the Burial Service. The mourners were as follow: -First carriage: Dr. Harper, Mrs. Harper, Mr. Edward R. Harper, and Mr. Cuthbert T. Harper. Second: Mr. Henry Jobling, J.P., Lieut-Col. Jobling, Mr. John Butterfield, and Mr. Southern. Third: Mr. Geo. E Sutcliffe, Mr. James Hargreaves, J.P., and Mr. Hargreaves. Fourth: Dr. Farrer, Mrs. Farrer, and Mr. John Bradley. The floral tributes were as follow: -Cross, "For a sign of our love in deepest sorrow, from Marion and Russell"; wreath, "In kind remembrance, from Mr. A. H. Atkin"; flowers, "In affectionate remembrance, Mrs. Sidney Duvall"; harp, "Dear Grannie, from her loving grandson, Cuthbert"; cross, "Dear Grannie, from her loving grandson, Ted"; cross, "In loving remembrance, from Mr. and Mrs. John Bradley, Sunnyholme"; cross, "With love and deepest sympathy, Mrs. W. A. Murray"; cross, "From all at Heasandford"; harp, Dr. and Mrs. Farrer, "In loving remembrance of a dear friend," Spring Villa, Brighouse; wreath, "With kind remembrance and deep regret, Mrs. Caudwell, Thimbley House, Hobeach Marsh"; wreath, With heartfelt sorrow, from the maids at Sutton House"; cross, "A token of remembrance, from cook and Graves"; wreath, "In affectionate remembrance, from Mr. and Mrs. Jobling, Springwood"; wreath, "With Dr. Harper and Emily's sympathy"; cross, "Friendship's last offering, from Colonel and Mrs. A. Jobling"; wreath, "With deepest symptahy and sincere regards, from an old friend, Mrs. Rawson, Brooklands, Thornton, Bradford"; and wreath, "With kindest remembrances, from J. W. and T. C. Willders."
