I'll have to investigate that connection.
I recall seeing lots of Sutcliffes in the Briercliffe cemeteries.

Not definitely but possibly the same couple? I found this death reference for a Walter Sutcliffe

I've just had a look at the Burnley burials that are on the site at http://briercliffesociety.co.uk/talkback/viewtopic.php?t=45&start=0
and there isnt a Walter in 1916. I guess this means he must be in one of the churchyards...St James or Haggate being the likeliest?

David, when you are next in Burnley, are you able to play your helpless male routine please and see if the library ladies will help you find a burial for Walter Sutcliffe sometime after 17 June 1916 please. We know it is not in Burnley. My guess would be St James and Haggate to begin with. If you can obtain a copy of the burial, that would be great but not a problem if you can't.

But what would he put down as his address? Poor man seems to be permanently in transit.

Speaking of which I was a census enumerator in 1981. Just before census night the fair arrived and I had to get forms off them. The address for some of them was the registration number of the wagon they slept in at night.

I bet that was interesting though. Were you into family tree then?

Yes Mel, of course!
Alice Bather married Walter Sutcliffe. I knew I'd seen that name before (I file each female under her maiden name, that's why I couldn't easily find Alice Sutcliffe).
Alice's half sister Mary Elizabeth Bather was born just down the road at 2 Townley Street in 1901.
It all fits together nicely.

I wasn't interested in family history then - I had 2 babies under 3 years old and no spare time.
But yes, it was interesting, especially when I found two young men trying to hide from me because they didn't want to be listed. I had to chase them round the waltzers to catch them. One day some family historian somewhere may have cause to br truly grateful to me for going to all that trouble!
