Post subject:  1934-Appointment of Burnley Coroner - Mr Harry Ogden

The Burnley Town Council, sitting as General Purposes Committee, last Monday appointed Mr H Ogden as Borough Coroner in succession to the late Mr H Procter.
Mr Ogden who is 53 years of age and one of Burnley's best known Solicitors, has had a wide experience both in practice and in public life. A son of the late Mr George Chester Ogden, and a native of Burnley, he began his education at Fulledge School and later went to Heversham Grammar School before proceeding to St Francis Xavier's College, Bruges. He was articled in Burnley but spent the last twelve months of his articles with London Agents. After being admitted a Solicitor in 1901, he entered the office of the Burnley Town Clerk (the late Mr A Steele Sheldon), but after about twelve months relinquished municipal work on account of the death of his mother and other members of the family, and started in private practice.
He has had an extensive Police Court experience and has had charge of the defence in three murder cases. His appointments as local representative of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labour, and as solicitor to the Burnley & District Licensed Victuallers' Association and the Off Licences' Association have also meant varied Police Court experience.
Mr Ogden entered public life when he joined the Burnley Town Council in 1912 as a representative of the Stoneyholme Ward. He resigned in 1913 to apply for the Coronership when the late Mr Arthur Sutcliffe was appointed. He however, re-entered the Council as a Fulledge Ward representative. When he again resigned in 1928 for business reasons he had been ten years a councillor and six years an alderman. His chief work was on the Education Committee, on which he served as Chairman for a period from the death of Alderman Keighley until Alderman J.H.Clegg completed his term of office as Mayor. He was also Chairman of the Governors of the Grammar School. He is also Chairman of the Burnley Savoy Ltd.
Mrs Ogden, who holds the B.A. degree and is a Borough Magistrate, is also well known in public life, being a member of the Governors of Manchester University, the Governors of Giggleswick Grammar School, the Burnley Education Committee, the National Health Insurance Committee, and other organisations. Their elder son is studying law at Oxford.

Municipal Election 1912
To The Burgesses of
Stoneyholme Ward

Ladies and Gentlemen,
It gives me great pleasure to accede to the request of a number of Ratepayers of this Ward that I should come forward as a Candidate at the forthcoming Municipal Election.
I am a native of Burnley and have lived in close proximity to Stoneyholme all my life so that I claim to have some knowledge of the Ward and its requirements.
For many years now I have practised as a Solicitor in this Borough and have also enjoyed 12 months experience in the Town Clerk's Office, thus having had many opportunities of becoming acquainted with all phases of Local Government work.
It is my opinion that the Public Health of a town is of first importance to its welfare, and if elected I shall support any scheme that makes for improvement in this direction. If we are to enjoy any real benefit from the money now being spent on Medical Inspection of school children it must be followed up by some system of treatment and after-care, and the adoption of School Clinics would undoubtedly be a move in the right direction.
A service of trams - better lighting of streets - improved communications with other wards - more consideration in town planning generally are some of the advantages which I should like to see enjoyed by Stoneyholme Ward equally with others and which I should endeavour to procure for it.
In conclusion let me assure you that if elected as your Representative my first aim will always be to watch the interests of Stoneyholme Ward and to serve my town loyally and to the best of my ability.
I am,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Yours faithfully,
H.OGDEN
71, Ormerod Road, Burnley
Ocotber 21st 1912
