The Manchester Times Friday September 9 1832 Mysterious Shooting Outrage On Tuesday information of a mysterious shooting affair near Nelson was received by the police. On Monday afternoon two boys were walking through the fields from Haggate to Nelson when they saw a man carrying a gun. Not liking the man's appearance they returned towards Haggate. The man followed and fired two shots, the reports being heard by persons in the locality. One boy was shot in the head and the other in the leg and ear with small shot. The wounds are not expected to prove dangerous. |

This has an interesting early reference to 'Nelson' as a place. The Lord Nelson Inn, from which the town was named, was there from 1805, but the older name of Marsden was still generally used for the area until much later than this. Rex |
