The Burnley News Wednesday February 13 1924 Briercliffe Assistant Overseer's Sudden Death Briercliffe lost one of its best known and most respected residents by the death, with tragic suddenness, on sunday night at his residence, 45, Burnley-road, of Mr. Thomas Pickles, who had for over twenty years occupied the position of assistant overseer and income tax collector in the township. Mr. Pickles, who was 53 years of age, leaves a widow, one daughter and three sons. One of the latter, a youth of seventeen, John Victor Pickles, sustained a fracture of the skull in the tram accident at Lane Head at Christmas, and though he has since recovered, it was thought by friends of the deceased that the affair had a prejudical effect on his health. Mr. Pickles was a native of the neighbouring village of Worsthorne, but had resided at Briercliffe nearly all his life. Formerly a member of Hill Lane Chapel choir, he was very fond of music, and was a capable player of the violin. Mr. Pickles was apparently quite well when he set out for a walk to Monk Hall farm, Briercliffe, accompanied by his wife. When returning, however, he complained of severe pains in the region of the heart, and when he reached home he collased on the floor. Mrs. Pickles immediately sent for Mr. Donaldson, but though the latter promptly obeyed the summons, Mr. Pickles passed away soon after his arrival, the cause of death being heart disease. The interment takes place to-day (Wednesday), at the graveyard of Haggate Baptist Chapel. |

I have details on Henry Pickles family going back to the early 19th century but so far I cannot connect the two families, although I believe they are related. |

I can see where you are coming from Kris. In 1901 James Henry is at RG13/3868 folio 59 pg 29 7 Towneley Street. Thomas, assuming it is this Thomas, is at no. 8. |
