Over 7000 Prisoners
The Germans are making another determined effort to take Riga, and have captured part of the bank of Dvina. Russia, however, says attacks have been held off. In fact, near Eckan the Germans have sustained a big repulse, which has cost them the loss of 30 kilometres of trenches constructed to the banks of the Aa. The Russians attacked after having bombarded the Germans during 40 hours consecutively. The German losses amount to 18,000 men.
In Galicia the russians are advancing strongly, as yesterday's official comminuqué from Petrograd states:-
On the western front, by a powerful coup de main north of Tarnopol, we carried part of the enemy's position in the region east of Lapuschno, and a number of machine guns.
Tarnopol is in Eastern Galinia, ?? miles south east of Lemberg.
