The Preston Guardian Saturday September 6th 1879 Contagious Diseases Among Cattle And Swine Mr. J Brindle, inspector, of Prescott, has reported to the Clerk of the Peace at Preston, that he discovered swine fever upon the premises of the Rev. Oswald Penrhyn, of Huyton Vicarage, Liverpool, on Monday last. Four animals were kept together, but only one was attacked with the disease, and that was at once slaughtered. The others showed no signs of having become affected. -since Wednesday, the following reports of fresh outbreaks of the disease have been received:- At Philip-street, Patricroft, occupied by Henry McNicholson; at Haggarty Farm, Briercliffe, Burnley, occupied by Robert Halstead; at Marsden Hall, Burnley, occupied by Er. Ed Bennett; and at the farm of the Rev. R.A.Rawstorne, Balderstone. At each of the places named one animal was affected and slaughtered; at Banklane Farm, Castleton, occupied by Henry Wadsworth, and at Sandfield House, Bacup, occupied by Henry Salmon, two swine, also affected, were killed at each place.-An outbreak of pleuro-pneumonia has occurred at Whitesyke Farm, Oswaldtwistle, tenanted by George Pickup, and one cow has been destroyed.-Yesterday, information was forwarded to the Clerk of the Peace, at Preston, to the effect that a horse belonging to Mr. Henry Gibson, Red Rock, Haigh, near Wigan, had had a severe attack of the glanders, and that the owner had voluntarily offered to have the animal destroyed. |

The Preston Guardian Saturday November 27 1880 Foot and Mouth Disease and Swine Fever The foot and mouth disease was found to exist on the premises of Robert Whitehead, of Samlesbury, near Preston, on Saturday, one animal being affected. It is supposed to have spread from a farm adjacent, where one animal was discovered to be suffering from the disease a few weeks ago. -On Tuesday, a communication was received from Inspector Tindal stating that a pig belonging to William Rushworth, Blackwood, Stacksteads, near Bacup, had been slaughtered, it being afflicted with swine fever. -On Thursday, it was reported to the Clerk of the Peace, that a pig on the premises of Thomas Spencer, publican, Thornton, near Liverpool, had died from swine fever. -Yesterday morning, information as received at the same office that sheep scab had occurred at Lower Wheathead Farm, Roughlee, near Colne, in the occupation of Robert Wilkinson. |
