Fatal Accident
On Wednesday last, a labourer, of the name James McGrath, in the employ of Mr. Robert Smith, builder, of Burnley, whilst engaged in removing some scaffolding, at the new factory now in the course of being erected for Messrs. Barnes, at the bottom of Curzon-street, by some means overbalanced himself, and was suddenly precipitated to the ground. The poor fellow was so much injured by the fall that, upon being taken up, it was found that life was nearly extinct, and he died whilst being carried home. By this melancholy accident a wife and five children are deprived of a steady and industrious husband and father.
Robbery and Murder
On Thursday night week, as John Barrowclough, of Barrowford, was returning from Preston, and had nearly reached Blackburn, he was attacked by two men, knocked down, and robbed of the sum of 11s. 6d. They afterwards abused him very much, and would no doubt have murdered him on the spot had not a man and woman happened to come up at this juncture, when the villains took to their heels and escaped. The poor fellow was afterwards taken to a neighbouring public-house, where he was most inhumanely refused admission; he, however, was ultimately allowed to lodge in the stable. In the morning he was very poorly, but contrived to walk from Blackburn to Barrowford. There he continued to get worse, and on Thursday morning last expired. These are all the particulars our correspondent has been able to give us at present; but as a coroner's inquest would be held yesterday (Friday,) we shall no doubt be in possession of more information next week.
