The Preston Chronicle Saturday May 28 1842
Sudden Death An inquest was held at the Black Bull Inn, Burnley-Lane-Head, on Saturday last, on the body of Ellen Thornton, a widow, aged 78, who was found dead in her own house, about half-past eleven o'clock on wednesday morning last. Her step-son stated, he saw her weaving at her looms at ten o'clock on Wednesday morning, and on entering the house in an hour and a half after, he found her sitting in her looms, with her picking-stick in her hand, quite dead. The coroner having summed up, the jury immediately returned a verdict of "died by the visitation of God."
Court Of Inquiry Another court of inquiry was oened, at Burnley Barracks, on Tuesday, into the conduct of the officers in command of a portion of the 61st foot, when the outrage by the soldiers of that regiment was committed on the inhabitants of Stockport. The present inquiry is principally to ascertain if Captain Verner, the officer in command at the time, acted with sufficient promptitudein quelling the outrage. We have not heard, that any complaints have been made by the authorities of Stockport respecting Captain Verner. It is said, that other parties have promoted the inquiry: but we are not prepared to vouch for the truth of the statement. Should the charge brought against Captain Verner be sustained, he will be tried by court-martial. Mr. Sadler, superintendent of the Stockport police has been summoned as a witness on the inquiry.
