Father of Four Missing Burnley Weaver's Fate
Official intimation has been received by Mrs. John Wm. Smith, of 62, Ashworth-street, Burnley, that her husband, Pte. (19586) J.W.Smith, of the East Lancashire Regt. has been missing after an engagement on April 9th in the Near East. Pte. Smith was a six loom weaver at Messrs. Folds' Park Shed, and enlisted in March, 1915. He left England last Christmas, going first to Egypt and then to the Near East, where he took part in some heavy fighting. He wrote home the day before he was reported missing, and mentioned that a neighbour named R. Hunter, in the same regiment, who had been reported missing on the 5th, was all right, as he was talking to him at the time. Pte. Smith has four children.
