The New War Loan
Meetings were held at all the mills in the village on Thursday morning to consider what should be done with regard to the new War Loan. Committees were formed at each shed to arrange for collecting units (6d. being a unit) with which to buy War Loan Certificates. Payments will probably be received each friday.

War Savings
The headmaster, Mr. Leaver, has just handed in to the National Association his first quarterly report as secretary of the recently formed Briercliffe Council School War Loan Association. Although only formed just over six weeks ago, there are already 120 members who have altogether brought 6,242 units - a unit being sicpence - value £156 1s. With these, 201 certificates have been bought. Each Friday payments of 6d. or any number of sixpences, are received at the school, and as many certificates as possible are bought. Those who first complete the 15/6 receive the certificates which, in many cases, have been bearing interest for several weeks.

The monthly meeting of the Parish Council took place on wednesday evening, when the following were present:- Councillors W. Burrows (chair), sutcliffe, Whitehead, Dent and Leaver. A precept of £30 was issued on the Overseers. The payment of £10 to Nelson Corporation re fire alarm was authorised. A discussion took place with regard to the production of vegetables, &c., in connection with the increasing of home grown food. It was decided to post notices in prominent places explaining what they proposed to do and giving instructions re seed potatoes, &c.
