The Liverpool Mercury Friday February 28 1840 Deaths By Burning - Caution To Parents On Friday, Johanna Slater, a girl five or six years of age, the daughter of a bricklayer in London, accidentally set fire to her clothes during the absence of her parents, who had gone out to work, leaving her and two younger children at home by themselves. She was so much burnt that she died the next day. At Habergham Eaves, the clothes of Thomas Hacking, aged about six years, caught fire whilst sitting on the fender, and he was so much burnt that he died in consequence. On Saturday se'nnight a similar accident occurred to Thomas Summer, aged two years and a half, the son of a joiner at Chorley, the child having been left alone in a room where there was a fire. He died a few days afterwards. On Tuesday morning se'nnight, at Lancaster, Mary Kelly, aged six years, the child of a labouring man, met with a similar accident, and died on Thursday. |

Friends of my parents in the 50's had a little girl burned to death when her nightie caught fire. Apparently it happened very quickly as night clothes were very flammable (is that the word) then. |
