Colne District News

Poors' Rates
The two last rates levied in Colne for the relief of the poor have been 1s.8d. in the pound, each for a period of two months, or at the rate of 10s. in the pound per annum. The shopkeepers of the town, with diminished returns, feel this increase of taxation very keenly.

Wilful Damage
For some time past it has been a common practice in the neighbourhood of Colne for mischievous persons to set fire to the hedges. To put a stop to this dangerous practice, a reward of £1 has been ofered for the discovery of the depredators.

Railway Accommodation
The Leeds and Bradford Extension Railway is so far advanced that it could easily be opened in the course of a couple of months or so; but being leased at a high rate, to commence from the day of opening, to the Midland Railway, the directors are unwilling to commence working until the opening of the East Lancashire Railway from Colne to Burnley, Accrington, and Blackburn, which would give the promise of a considerable through traffic. It is not probable that the latter line can be opened until near the close of the year, the works at Accrington, Colne, burnley, &c., are so exceedingly heavy. No time is being lost to have the railway in operation as soon as possible.

if your interested in surrounding areas every week in the Nelson Leader, Colne times and Burnley express. Pictures of the area past are printed. Some weeks the pictures are of over 1 hundred years on others the pictures are only about 30 years ago. Any way the site to see some archive pictures is www.pendletoday.co.uk go to Archive then down the left column Nostalgia and Geoff Crambie is the guy who does it.

Brilliant, thanks. As a non-local, I read the Burnley (and surrounding regions) news on the internet. I rarely visit the Pendle Today site, opting for the Burnley Express mostly. I will be adding Pendle Today to my favourites.
