Death By Burning
On Wednesday week, an inquest was held at the George the Fourth public-house, Habergham Eaves, on view of the body of Ellen Pilkington, aged about six-and-a-half years, daughter of George Pilkington, stone-mason. It appeared, that on Tuesday the deceased was discovered in flames in the road opposite the National School, Habergham Eaves, at about twelve o'clock at noon. The flames were speedily put out, but the deceased was so much burned that she died early the following morning. The National School was undergoing a cleansing, and the children had a holiday; and it is supposed that, during the time the people who were cleaning the school had gone to their dinner, the deceased had opened the door, and gone into the school, and by some means set fire to her clothes. Verdict - "Accidental death."

Death Occasioned By Fright
On Thursday evening last, as an elderly person named Sarah Stuttard, wife of Henry Stuttard, was returning home from Burnley to her residence at Winn Hill, she was very nearly run over by a car which was proceeding in the direction of Padiham. She had been in a precarious state of health for some time, but the fright had such an effect upon her that she took to her bed and died on the morning of Saturday.
