Committal of Nine Prostitutes
We lately announced the formation of a "Society for the suppression of Vice," in the town of Burnley, and we are glad to say that its good effects are now becoming apparent. The police constables finding their efforts seconded by such an association, are now vigilant in looking after those dens on infamy, the taps and beer-shops, and in clearing the town of women of ill-fame, who, within the last few years, have increased in numbers to a fearful extent. P.C. Walmsley and P.C. Howarth took no fewer than nine of these unfortunate women into custody, on Saturday evening, having been caught stopping individuals in the public streets; and on Monday they were brought up at the Court-house, before John Heelis, Esq., who committed them all to Lancaster Castle for one month.
