Narrow Escape Through Careless Driving
On Monday evening, about seven o'clock, a person going through Darwen in the direction of Blackburn, with a horse and gig, ran over a little boy who was crossing the street at the time. He was immediately picked up by some by-standers, and upon examination it was found he had received but little injury.

Dreadful Accident
Yesterday week a dreadful accident occurred at one of the coalpits in Habergham Eaves, belonging to Thursby and Scarlett. About six in the evening, when they were changing hands for the nightshift, one of the men just having stepped out of the basket, one Thomas Jackson, stepped on, - up went the basket striking against the cross-beam. Jackson was then struck most violently against the beam - he was by this means knocked out of the basket - he fell upon the edge of the pit and went down. Every limb was broken, his body smashed, and his head dashed in pieces. He has left a wife and two children. He was only twenty-four years of age. An inquest was held on Wednesday last over the body, and after a searching investigation which lasted six hours, the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. the Government Inspector of Mines was in attendance at the inquest. The apprently negligent manner the proprietors place important trust in the hands of inexperienced youths was most severely censured. the engine-tenter only having been some six months at the business, and had previously been a carter. Human life ought not to be trifled with in such a manner.
