Burnley District News

New School
A new National and Sunday School, in connection with St. Peter's Church, Burnley, is about to be erected near to the Duke of York inn, Burnley Lane. This additional means of education will be a great boon to the inhabitants of that now populous district. Its being licensed for divine service ought not to be overlooked when the building is completed.

Representation of Burnley
On Thursday afternoon, a meeting convened by circular was held in the Mechanic's Institution, Burnley, for the purpose of considering the propriety of moving in the matter of the representation of Burnley in parliament. The circular was as follows:-
Burnley, Feb. 27th, 1861
SIR,-As Sir George C. Lewis has thought fit to ignore the claims of Burnley to representation, in his proposed disposal of the vacant seats of Sudbury and St. Albans, and believing that its being overlooked is owing to some misconception of the extent of its population and the importance and value of its trade, it is thought desirable that immediate steps should be taken for placing a statement of our claims before the government.
To further this object a meeting is intended to be held at the Mechanics' Institution on Thursday, the 28th instant, at 3 p.m., when the favour of your attendance is particularyl requested.

During the proceedings it was stated that there is now a population of upwards of 32,000 within the police circle, and over 42,000 in the two townships of Burnley and Habergham Eaves. The rateable value of property within the circle exceeds £78,000, and within the two townships upwards of £88,000. It was therefore deemed advisable to lay these facts before government, and a deputation consisting of Mr. Richard Shaw, Mr. J.C. Dwyer, barrister at law, Mr. William Robinson, Mr. William Lomas, in connection with Sir J.P. Kay-Shuttleworth, Bart., and the county members, was appointed to proceed to London for this purpose.
