Treat To The Old
Through the exertions of Mr. Lennard, butler and house steward to Sir J.P. Kay-Shuttleworth, Bart., at Gawthorp Hall, and the ready co-operation of numerous friends, upwards of 200 of the oldest inhabitants of Habergham and Lower House were provided with an evening's true social enjoyment, on Saturday, in All Saints' Church school-rooms, Habergham. Tea, prepared on the most liberal scale, having been partaken of, Mr. Lennard was called on to preside over the assembly, which gradually increased till the room was crowded. Interesting addresses were delivered by the chairman and others, these being judiciously interspersed with recitations, songs, glees, and other musical performances. An efficient company of singers, and a drum and fife band from Padiham, greatly contributed to the harmony of the proceedings. The expenses connected with this meeting, as well as with a similar but larger one recently held at Padiham, were defrayed by contributions obtained from various parts of the country by Mr. Lennard, whose benevolent efforts are peculiarly appreciated in the midst of the prevailing distress.
