Linnet Singing Matches

The fourth annual singing match, for linnets, took place at Mr. James Dougall's, the Prince Arthur Inn, Avenham-lane, on Whit Tuesday, when a large number of birds were entered, some excellent ones coming from Burnley, Blackburn, Padiham, and other parts of East Lancashire. After the birds were drawn for singing, Mr. Henry Daniels and Mr. John Smith were appointed judges, and Mr. John Birtwistle referree, and their judgement gave satisfaction to the competitors. The first prize was awarded to Job Greenwood, of Burnley; the second to James Briggs, of Padiham; the third to Peter Wade, of Habergham Eaves; the fourth to Charles Buff, of Blackburn; and the fifth to Ellis Anderson, of Blackburn. The following is a list of the prizes: - 1st, a six quarts copper kettle; 2nd, five quarts copper kettle; 3rd, four quarts copper kettle; 4th, handsome Britannia metal tea-pot; 5th, Britannia metal tea-pot. After the singing, the company enjoyed themselves with songs, toasts, &c., and separated after wishing much success to Mr. and Mrs. Dougall.
