Child Burnt To Death
On Wednesday last, an inquest was held at the Star Inn, Burnley, on view of the body of a fine girl, about three years of age, named Priscilla, the daughter of Mr. James Heys, grocer &c., Church-street, Burnley, who was so severely burnt on Saturday, the 24th ultimo, as to cause her death on the following day. It appeared from the evidence that the mother had lighted a fire in one of the rooms above stairs, fr the purpose of enabling the children to play in-doors. Owing to some accident, the clothes of the girls became ignited, and the face and upper portion of the body were so burnt as to result in death. Verdict, "Accidental death by her clothes having caught fire."
Fatal Accident
On Monday last, an inquest was held at the Parker's Arms Inn, Burnley, on the body of Thomas Clough, engine-tenter, employed at Mr. Carwell's colliery. He was in the act of looking at some part of the engine, with the intention of making some alterations to prevent the large escape of steam, when standing between the wall and the upright shaft of the steadying beam attached to the engine; and not having calculated the time of an oscillation of the beam with sufficient accuracy, his head was caught between the beam and the wall, and his skull was in consequence so severely fractured as to cause immediate death. He was in the 44th year of his age, and has left a wife and eight children to lament his loss. He had been only two days in the emplloyment of Mr. Cardwell, Saturday being the third morning of his attendance at the works. So true is it that "in the midst of life we are in death." Verdict, "Accidental death."
