Destructive Fire
Early on the morning of yesterday week, the machine shop belonging to Messrs. Whitaker and Sagar, Brisge-street, Burnley, was found to be on fire. A policeman was first attracted to the spot by the smell, and nearly at the same time two persons passing made the same discovery and communicated the alarm to the owners. The fire bell was immediately rang, and the engines promptly arrived on the spot, but so rapid were the flames in consequence of the bottom floors being thickly covered with shavings and the great quantity of loose dry wood lying about, that the second floor and the roof had fallen in before they could render any effective assistance. Nothing has been discovered which will explain the origin of the fire. It was first seen about 2 o'clock in the morning, and not an hour elapsed before the whole was one smouldering mass of blackened ruins. The actual loss is calculated at £550, and we are sorry to add that no part of it is insured. The firm had existed little more than a year, and had been conducted with great credit and considerable success. We have been informed that a subscription is to be entered into to enable them to re-commence business, and we heartily wish the effort may be successful.
